To the Media Giraffe/Journalism That Matters community:
We've just finished production on a new dvd, "Journalism That Matters: The
Passion of Place." It's a studio-produced session, with excellent audio (done
at Minnesota Public Radio) and a two-camera mix.
You can preview it on Archive.org:

Finding the passion of place -- the new pamphleteers
What motivates people to launch a local online news community -- a
"placeblog" and what are their challenges, their successes, the
opportunities, vision and passion which accompany this work? Twelve
citizen-journalists -- "placebloggers" -- gathered on Friday, June 6,
2008, for a one-hour conversation at Minnesota Public Radio. Listen to the
audio stream of their conversation by clicking on the carat of the bar
below. Or download an MP3 podcast for offline listening. Moderated by Bill
Densmore, director of the Media Giraffe Project at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst.
ORDER THE DVD:
A DVD may be ordered for $19, from this link (allow two weeks for shipping):

===============================
HOLD THE DATE / NEXT CONVENING
Philadelphia, Oct. 22-25, 2008
===============================
We're pleased to announce that the Media Giraffe Project is teaming up
with Temple University's Media Education Laboratory and several other
(still tentative) academic partners for:
"Rebooting the News:
Reconsidering an Agenda for American Civic Education"
Oct. 23-25, 2008 / Philadelphia, Pa.
We're working closely with the American Society of Newspaper Editors and
the journalism program at Stony Brook University, both of which have made
major commitments to news-literacy education. The key public convening on
the topic will be in March at Stony Brook. The smaller Philadelphia
convening will be designed, among other things, to initiate ideas and
collaboration for the Stony Brook gathering.
Here's the preview web page for the event:
http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Reboot-home
Part of this convening is by-invitation only. If you would like to be
considered for an invite, email a proposal to reboot at mediagiraffe.org
A link to registration should be available July 23. If you want a reminder
when registration opens, also email reboot at mediagiraffe.org
Hope to see some of you in Philadelphia!
